Operating within one of the busiest travel-retail environments in the world, WHSmith faced a dual challenge; improving customer experience for airline passengers while enhancing operational efficiency across its airport stores.

Airline passengers receiving flight delay compensation vouchers through the iCoupon platform encountered a fragmented redemption process. Manual validation at tills, inconsistent experiences across stores, and long queues during peak hours led to operational bottlenecks, human error, and increased fraud risk. The lack of real-time visibility and automated validation severely impacted customer satisfaction at a moment when service recovery mattered most.
- Fragmented Loyalty Experience:
At the same time, travel-retail customers have no seamless way to earn or redeem Heathrow Rewards points in-store. iCoupon Digital Voucher Integration
Using Flooid’s class-leading MFE framework, iCoupon was integrated as a new, real-time tender within WHSmith’s POS systems. The process began with a simple boarding pass scan, triggering a secure API call to iCoupon’s cloud platform. Eligible vouchers were validated instantly and redeemed directly at checkout.
This eliminated manual checks, reduced transaction time by up to 50%, and added real-time error handling, voiding, and audit logging; ensuring fast, fraud-resistant, and consistent voucher processing across all tills and self-checkouts.
Heathrow Rewards Loyalty Integration
The Heathrow Rewards programme was embedded into POS, SCO, and HPOS systems, enabling customers to earn 1 point per £1 spent and redeem 500 points for a £5 discount in real time.
The integration supported complex basket rules, co-use with staff discounts, and offline card capture for uninterrupted service, turning loyalty engagement into a smooth, data-driven experience at checkout.
